Serafin Reyes Viera, 69, of New Haven, is charged with evading responsibility resulting in injury and failure to yield to a pedestrian from the Jan. 14 crash, police said.
The child was in a crosswalk near 655 Main Street in East Haven when a Honda HR-V struck him, police said. Several witnesses ran to help and tried to stop the driver, but he never slowed down as he turned onto Eastbound Frontage Road.
The child was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police did not release further details about the extent of the injuries.
Surveillance video captured the crash and helped officers identify the Honda and its owner, Reyes Viera, who matched the driver's description, authorities said.
When police spoke to Reyes Viera, he admitted to driving in the area that day but said he did not recall hitting anyone, according to police.
After an arrest warrant was issued, Reyes Viera turned himself in and was released on a $2,500 bond, authorities said.
